What makes wing chun different from other martial arts?
Wing chun is different from other martial arts in many ways.
- Wing Chun focuses on the centerline theory, which means that we always protect the center of our body (i.e. nose, chin, neck, xyphoid process, vital organs and genitals).
- Wing Chun is also a very relaxed martial arts. Unlike most martial arts, our style is most effective when we are in a state of complete relaxation.
- Our style was designed by women to fight against larger men. This means that anyone can benefit from Wing Chun.
- Wing Chun can be practiced across a lifetime. A great example includes Ip Chun, who is approaching 100 years old.
- We don’t offer belts, or require fancy uniforms. Our focus is on teaching you the art of Wing Chun. You can progress through our system without worrying on what color belt you have earned.
How is rank achieved in Wing Chun?
There is no official rank in our style of kung fu. Many martial arts have a belt rank and order system, but in wing chun we focus more on our 3 empty hand forms. These forms are setup in a rank-like system, which allows students to progress through the wing chun system, with each form building upon its predecessor.
What are the forms in wing chun kung fu?
The 3 empty hand forms include:
- Siu Nim Tau (Little Idea) – The first and most important form in Wing Chun, Siu Nim Tau (“The little idea for beginning”), Siu Nim Tao has three sections. The main techniques are: Tun, Bong and Fuk.
This form contains the basic vocabulary of our system. - Chum Kiu has three sections which train the fist, the horse, and the waist. One must coordinate the body, the hand and the horse to move instinctively. Timing is extremely important. This form trains you to balance your body in motion.
- There are three parts to the Biu Je form. These embody the concept of Chum Jang- to cut back to the centerline. This is the central concept of Biu Je, to be able to quickly return to the centerline.
At more advanced levels, we also teach wooden dummy, long pole and butterfly knife training.
Do you teach any weapons training?
Our style of Wing Chun Kung Fu trains with two weapons, in our more advanced stages of training. The first is a long pole (Luk Dim Bun Gwan) and second weapon is butterfly knives (Baat Jaam Doa). Weapons are typically not introduced until advanced levels of training are achieved.
Is Wing Chun good for self defense?
Wing Chun is an excellent choice for self defense. Our system was developed hundreds of years ago, by a Chinese woman named Ng Mui. It was designed to be a lethal force against larger enemies. In practice, Wing Chun includes eye gouges, finger thrusts to the throat, elbow strikes and devastating knee kicks. When taught under the right conditions, Wing Chun is a great way to defend yourself from danger.
How much does it cost?
Our classes are reasonably priced and start at $100 per month and there are no contracts.
